Navigating multiple sclerosis #DoWhateverItTakes
I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2011. I had a 1 year old baby boy and an 11 year old girl. I was terrified of the uncertainty and unpredictable nature of MS. I decided early on that I would #dowhateverittakes to be as healthy as I could be to reduce the risk of disease progression.
Dietary changes became a priority while I managed my ‘new normal’ which led me to study a Bachelor of Complementary Medicine and then a Bachelor of Health Science (nutrition and dietetic medicine).
Where nutrition led me
In the early days of diagnosis I struggled with temporary paralysis, bladder problems, optic neuritis and constant fatigue. New lesions were evident on MRI and it was recommended that I go on immune modulating therapy.
I never felt I could ’wing it’ and rely on conventional medicine on its own. It needed to be a combination of both conventional medicine (infusions) plus complementary medicine (diet and lifestyle changes). They really go hand in hand.
This journey inspired me to help other people facing the same fears and to help them get some control back through nutrition, even though at times every thing else seems out of control.
